The Lost Hour
The Lost Hour Project: Crafting Bespoke Designs for Pubs and Bars
At James2, we’re always eager to take on projects that challenge our craftsmanship and creativity. One of our standout projects recently was The Lost Hour Project, which involved creating bespoke designs for a large chain of pubs undergoing refurbishment. From custom steelwork to unique mirrors, we worked closely with the client to bring their vision to life.
Client Collaboration:
The journey began with the client’s team providing all the designs, along with detailed dimensions and specifications. We worked closely with them, having multiple discussions to review the plans and ensure we fully understood their vision. Our goal was always to meet the client’s expectations, and this constant collaboration was key to ensuring we delivered the perfect results.
Custom Designs and Materials:
The project included several standout elements, such as custom welded steel frames and a bespoke mirror sourced from Brompton Glass. Sam, one of our team members, took charge of the welding, while we worked with Brompton Glass to create a stunning mirror that was finished with LED lighting. This illuminated feature became a focal point of the design, offering both functionality and a modern touch to the pub.
The steel used in these pieces was mild steel, chosen for its strength and stability. Not only was it durable, but it also provided a sturdy foundation for the overall design. The bespoke mirrors added a sense of elegance, enhancing the pub’s atmosphere while serving a practical purpose.
Precision Craftsmanship and Tight Deadlines
Each of the three units we created was custom-built to fit specific spaces within the pub, ensuring the designs fit perfectly and seamlessly integrated into the existing environment. Deadlines were tight - pubs can’t afford to stay closed for long - so time management was essential. Despite the pressure, we worked efficiently, ensuring every piece met the client’s specifications while maintaining our high standards.
Effective Communication
Communication played a vital role in the success of the project. We kept the client informed throughout, providing regular updates on timelines, asking clarifying questions, and confirming delivery details. This proactive approach kept everything on track and avoided any surprises. Once the items were delivered, the client was delighted with the results, leading to more work for us. This positive feedback resulted in two additional projects, showcasing the trust the client had in our work.
Lessons Learned and Future Opportunities
The most challenging aspect of this project was balancing it with our residential work. To manage this, we learned the importance of getting drawings and specifications early on, allowing us to plan effectively and stay ahead of deadlines.
As for the designs themselves, we were particularly pleased with how well everything came together. The industrial yet sleek designs not only served a functional purpose—providing storage for bottles and glasses—but also enhanced the overall look of the pub. We rigorously checked the quality of each piece, ensuring it met the high standards we set for all our work.
Expanding Our Portfolio
The Lost Hour Project was a significant step for us at James2, as it marked our expansion into the commercial sector. This opportunity allowed us to demonstrate our ability to follow clients’ exact specifications and transform their ideas into reality. The project highlighted how we can excel in the pub, bar, and restaurant sectors, and we’re eager to take on more commercial work in the future.
Our success with The Lost Hour Project also led to additional work, including a project for handrails in the car park, which was outside our usual scope. The client’s trust in us for this task reaffirmed our capabilities, and we’re excited to continue building relationships within the commercial sector.
Looking Ahead
Overall, The Lost Hour Project has been a great fit for James2. It showcased our ability to create custom, high-quality pieces that meet our clients’ needs, and it helped us further establish our presence in the commercial sector. With every project, we learn more and grow, and we’re excited for what’s to come.
